This option was developed in response to the rapid growth and spread of digital
electronics to enable the conversion of data, voice, image, and video into bit
streams that can be transmitted over a common medium. It involves computer
networks, ranging in size from a few workstations to world-wide communications
complexes. The common technology underlying the transmission of such multiform
information has launched a revolution. The design and management of today's
tele-communications systems require exposure to the underlying technology,
familiarity with its integration into the business environment, and an
understanding of related legal and regulatory issues. Practical experience with
the equipment is indispensable to meeting these needs.
The rapid growth of telecommunication has created a critical lack of trained
network administrators. Likewise, the unprecedented expansion of multiform
information impacts operators of telephone, television, cellular and satellite
systems; creators and producers of books, magazines, movies and music; and
manufacturers of consumer-electronic equipment. The industry recognizes that
skilled telecommunications administrators need hands-on technical experience as
well as a managerial background.
