Taxation
Courses and graduate programs in taxation provide an in-depth study of
individual, corporate, partnership and estate/trust-related tax policies and
issues, and stresses the development of tax research skills.
Coursework emphasizes the knowledge of basic policies and procedures and
application of these rules to actual cases.
California State University, East Bay operates a Tax Clinic as part of the
University's academic program as an official graduate tax course. Graduate tax
students are given the unique exposure to the real world practice of tax
procedure. Students are assigned to consult with or represent low to
intermediate income taxpayers who are under IRS/FTB audit or who are having
collection difficulties, and who are those least able to afford to pay for
commercial help.
In addition, the Department (in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service
and the California State Franchise Tax Board) sponsors the Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance Program (VITA). The VITA Program is staffed by CSUH students from
February to April and offers free income tax preparation to individuals in the
community.
